APRIL 2011 JORGE GONZALEZ CHAPELA DATA SETS ARE STATA 11 OR MS EXCEL 2007 FILES; COMPUTER CODE ARE STATA 11 FILES DATA SETS (MOST VARIABLE NAMES ARE EXPLAINED IN THE FILES WOMEN76_93.DO AND EXPERIENCE.DO) - FILE PSID76_93.DTA File with information on the 53,013 persons interviewed by the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) between 1968 and 1993. It is organized in a wide format, with each observation representing a person. The included variables cover the period 1976-1993 only. - FILE MSA.DTA (NOT INCLUDED AS IT CONTAINS SENSITIVE DATA) File created from the CD-ROM with geographical codes supplied by the PSID. It contains the year, the family-year identifier (id) and the code of the metropolitan statistical area (MSA) where each family resided at the moment of the interview. It is organized in a long format, containing 131,940 observations (family-years), which is the result of adding (across families interviewed in 1976-1993) the no. of years each family was interviewed. - MAPRICESW.DTA File with the indices for the relative price of food consumed at home (rpfaw) and the relative price of recration goods (rpraw) at the MSA level. It is organized in a long format, with each observation representing a MSA-year. It contains 486 observations: 27 MSA times 18 years. The indices for rpfaw and rpraw are obtained in PRICE INDICES.XLSX - PRICE INDICES.XLSX File with price indices (annual averages) for "Food at home" (SA111), "Food away from home" (SE19), and "Entertainment" (SA6) for the 27 metropolitan areas listed in the paper's Data Appendix - WOMEN1.DTA File with all women present at any time in some PSID family unit between 1968 and 1993. Included variables cover the period 1976-1993 only. This file is organized in a long format, with observations representing person-years. COMPUTER CODE - FILE WOMEN76_93.DO This file merges a variable with MSA identifiers to PSID data for the period 1976-1993. Then, it adds information on price indices at the MSA-level. It also explains most variable names. - FILE EXPERIENCE.DO This file generates a measure of labor force experience based upon information on years worked since age 18 and information on market time. Experience is increased in one year when annual market hours are positive. - FILE EXPERIENCE2000.DO This file generates a measure of labor force experience based upon information on years worked since age 18 and information on market time. Experience is increased in one year when annual market hours are 2000 or more. - FILE SMPL_SELECTION.DO This file selects the main study samples as explained in the Data Appendix, and obtains Table C.1 - TABLES1-3.DO This file contains the computer code for obtaining Tables 1-3, including S.E. corrections - TABLES1-3EXPERIENCE2000.DO This file contains the computer code for obtaining Tables 1-3 (and S.E. corrections) when experience is increased in one year when annual market hours are 2000 or more - TABLES4and5R.DO This file contains the computer code for obtaining Tables 4 and 5R (the latter included in the Response to Reviews), including S.E. corrections - TBAR5000.DO This file contains the computer code for obtaining participants' ISEs when total annual hours to be allocated (Tbar) are 5000. - TABLE5_1.DO This file contains the computer code for obtaining the first set of estimates (intertemporally non-separable preferences) presented in Table 5. - TABLE5_2.DO This file contains the computer code for obtaining the second set of estimates presented in Table 5. - TABLE4EDUC.DO This file contains the computer code for obtaining Table 4 but including years of schooling in the instrument set.
